The Maharashtra government has appointed IAS officer Sanjay Sethi as the chairman of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). This will be the first time that a bureaucrat will helm the that which is generally reserved for a public representative.
Sethi, who serves as the Transport Secretary and holds the rank of Additional Chief Secretary, was named MSRTC chairman through a gazette notification issued on Wednesday. He was appointed after the resignation of Bharat Gogawale, who has been inducted into the state cabinet.
Sethi is already an ex-officio member of the corporation in his capacity as Transport Secretary. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik had recently written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging the appointment of a new chairman for the corporation, following his Karnataka visit to study their transport system.
MSRTC is one of India’s largest public transport undertakings, operating around 14,000 buses and serving nearly 55 lakh passengers daily across the state. The corporation employs approximately 90,000 workers and has been facing financial difficulties, including rising losses, an aging fleet, employee strikes, and declining ridership.
