NAUSHAD Mohammed Hussain,46,who was picked up by the police in Chembur for a theft on Saturday,allegedly died during questioning in the Detection Room of the Chembur police station,police said.
Hussain had suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Sion Hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival. A postmortem report is awaited. The two policemen who picked up Hussain from his home in Shivaji Nagar in Govandi,head constable Dilip Sawant and constable Sanjay Dehala have been suspended for negligence and the death is being probed by crime branch.
Hussain hit his head repeatedly with his handcuffed hands. He had also banged his head against the wall in the detection room. There were bloodstains on a bar in the window grill apart from the wall, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Satyanarayan Chaudhary. The deceased was bleeding from head wounds. Another man,Ibrahim Malik,who was picked up along with him and two other men who had been brought to the Detection Room in another case witnessed the incident.
Chaudhary added that statements of the three eyewitnesses have been recorded and that the police were investigating all possible angles. Hussain was not arrested but was only brought to the police station in connection with a theft case. Malik has said the constables hit Hussain with a cricket bat. They have been suspended for not following Supreme Court guidelines on arrest, he added.
