THE Powai police have arrested the husband of a 21-year-old woman on Sunday for allegedly abetting her suicide. The police said the victim,Madhuri Dhuri, had set herself ablaze on Saturday following a quarrel with her husband Rakesh (25). Dhuris husband was arrested after her parents lodged a police complaint on Sunday.
The police had initially registered an accidental death report in the case, but have now registered a case of abetment.
Senior police inspector Bajirao Bhosale said Rakesh has been booked in connection with Dhuris death. Her parents came to Mumbai from Ratnagiri on Sunday and lodged a complaint, said Bhosale.
Rakesh has been booked under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court and has been remanded in police custody till Wednesday, said Bhosale.
Dhuri and Rakesh lived with their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter at Tunga Villages Karuna Nagar area in Powai. The police said the couple had a domestic quarrel around 9.30 am,after which Madhuri told Rakesh that she was going to her parents house.
Officers said Rakesh also left the house with the couples daughter around 11.30 am,after she started crying. Around 1.20 pm,when Rakesh was still out,he apparently received a text message from Dhuri thatsaid she was leaving him forever.
Bhosale said Dhuri set herself ablaze around 1.30 pm. She was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, but died soon after.
