The Valiv police arrested a tantrik and five men,who allegedly performed human sacrifice by beheading a woman last month. The men were arrested Friday, the same day when the state Assembly passed the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman,Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Bill, during the winter session at Nagpur.

The victim,Kalavati Gupta (55),a resident of Vakola, had been visiting tantrik Sarvajeet Karvar (59) for the past year in the hope of having her paralytic son ‘cured’. She was referred to him by a friend. An airplane mechanic,Karvar is a resident of the Air India Colony in Vakola.

On November 15,the woman told her son,Radhe Sham (22),that she was going out,but did not return. A missing person’s complaint was filed by the son at the Vakola police station on November 16.

An officer said they found the headless body of an unidentified elderly woman near Nalasopara phata on November 17,around a 100 m from the highway. Posters of the body with detailed identification marks were sent to all the police stations in the state. The severed head was found on December 13 in the mangroves near Vasmare bridge, between Vasai and Virar.

“Inquiring about his mother,Radhe Sham approached the Shanti Nagar police in Bhiwandi and saw the poster. Recognising his mother’s saree,he then approached Valiv police,” said Anil Kumbhare, superintendent of police (Thane

He told them about his mother’s meetings with Karvar, following which the officers detained the tantrik.

“In a matter of hours,Karvar revealed the plot of the murder as well as the names of his accomplices,” said Kumbhare.

Karvar told the police that he had two more clients,Ramdhani Yadav (33) and his brother Gulab (28). Ramdhani,an autorickshaw driver, used to take Gupta to Karvar. The police said Ramdhani wanted a cure for his ailing wife, and Gulab sought a solution to the marital discord at his home, for which they had approached Karvar.

Karvar, sensing an opportunity to make money, advised human sacrifice to the brothers.

“Gupta being a soft target,Karvar advised the two to kill her. The Yadavs with their friend,Shamsunder Gupta, and two of Karvar’s relatives,Satyanarayan Gaud and his son Punkaj, decided to take the victim to Vasai, where they could kill her and dump the body easily,” said Kumbhare.

On November 15,Karvar told the victim that they needed to visit a shrine in Vasai for a puja, which was essential for her son’s recovery. The accused took the woman to a forested area in Vasai and asked her to perform the puja. The moment she bent down, they chopped her head off. The six dumped her body near the phata and tossed the head off Vasmare bridge. “The head and the body have been sent for medical examination to JJ hospital,” said Kumbhare.
