Huge crater forms as 90-ft wide road in Dharavi caves in

Police said no injuries were reported, but the bus suffered minor damage.

A large portion of a 90-feet road in Dharavi caved in Monday morning when a manhole of a sewage line collapsed as a school bus passed by. The rear of the bus was caught in the cave-in,near Dharavi Police Station, with the crater thus formed roughly measuring 15×10 feet.

Police said no injuries were reported, but the bus suffered minor damage.

A senior civic official said repair work would be taken up soon. “A storm water drains manhole located a few feet away from the cave-in site is also expected to be affected during the work,” he said.

An official from BMC’s sewerage operations (SO) department said the work would likely take 3-4 days. “We will start the work tomorrow. A sewage chamber has collapsed, but this has not affected the sewage pipeline running underneath. So there is no damage to any of the utilities underground, including the water pipeline,” he said.

Chief engineer of BMC’s storm water drains department,L S Vhatkar, said plans for acquiring a ground-penetrating radar machine to check the status of underground utilities had been put on hold.

“We have not yet floated the tender. We are working out a policy to deal with these problems,” Vhatkar said.
