The police in Mumbai said Tuesday they have launched a manhunt for an unknown motorcycle rider after he allegedly hit a 79-year-old woman in the city’s Sewri area, severely injuring her last Wednesday.
The RAK Marg police registered a case on Monday under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving that endangers human life) and 125 (b) (rash or negligent acts endangering human life or safety) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the unknown biker. The woman’s grandson filed the complaint.
“We have been scanning CCTV cameras to find the culprit,” said a police officer.
An accident and a frantic search
According to the police, the victim, Saira B Tazzuddin Mulla, lives in the Sewri area along with her family members. They said the accident occurred on December 3 at around 4.30 pm, when Saira was on her way to her old home, which is a few hundred meters from her current address. Her family lives in both places.
At around 5 pm, an unknown biker hit her in front of the Arya Honda showroom near Dnyaneshwar Nagar. She suffered serious injuries to her head, legs, chest, and waist. Passersby rushed her to KEM Hospital, a police officer said.
When Saira did not return home, her family began searching for her. Her grandson, Mohammad Wasim Ayub Mulla, who had installed a GPS device on her body, tracked her, and found her location at KEM Hospital. He rushed to the hospital and found his grandmother had been admitted there.
He took her to the JJ Hospital for better treatment, where doctors found a fracture in her back and several internal injuries, said a police officer.
A police officer said Wasim visited the RAK Police Station Monday, and registered a case. The officer added that the investigation is underway.
