The Tilak Nagar police have arrested a 45-year-old house help for allegedly stealing gold ornaments worth Rs 4.02 lakh from a 63-year-old woman’s house in Ghatkopar. The police said that one of the diamond rings that was allegedly stolen by the accused was an ancestral ring given to the complainant by her mother-in-law.

According to police officials, the 63-year-old woman stays with her husband near Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar (east).

“As she is unable to do any housework, she hired a person named Mangesh Bharge. He was working there for the last two months and would take care of cleaning the house,” said an officer.

However on June 24, the complainant and her husband went to Delhi for some personal work.

“She had kept a pair of keys at her neighbour’s house and asked Bharge to collect the keys from them and return it after cleaning the house,” said an officer adding, “And before leaving for Delhi, the senior citizen had kept the keys of her locker inside her shoes in the shoe rack.”

As usual, Bharge started going to her house to clean after which he would return the keys to the neighbours. But one day, he found her locker’s keys which she had hidden inside her shoes, said the officer.

“He then opened the locker and stole a ring. He did this for the next couple of days as he stole only one ornament each day,” said an investigator.

And after the couple returned to their house on Thursday, the accused allegedly handed over the keys and informed them that he would not be coming to work from the next day onward. He also stopped answering her calls.

The senior citizen sensed something amiss after which she went and checked her locker when she saw that her ornaments were missing.

“One of the diamond rings was given to her by her mother in law as a ritual. While an expensive watch was also one of the things that was stolen,” said an officer.

The woman then reported the matter at Tilak Nagar police station after which a case was registered and the police began looking for the suspect.

“We had his phone number but his phone was switched off. We got his call data records and contacted some of our informers when we learned that he stays in Ghatkopar too. We went to his house but only his children were present at the house as his wife also works as a house help,” said an officer.

The investigating team kept a close eye on his house but he did not return until late on Thursday after which they got his location again and found that Bharge was in Saki Naka after which a team was sent. During his custodial investigation, he confessed to the crime and was arrested.

The police said that they managed to recover most of the gold ornaments but the accused had sold one of the gold ornaments to a jeweller and that they are trying to recover it.

“We will produce him in court and seek his custody. We are also trying to understand whether he has stolen any valuables from other houses where he worked,” said an investigator.
