Giant holes gape through rusty iron roofs; tall grass sprouts from piles of rubble where walls used to be; figs germinate from rooftops and send their roots down the decaying remnants of the drainpipes.

Giant holes gape through rusty iron roofs; tall grass sprouts from piles of rubble where walls used to be; figs germinate from rooftops and send their roots down the decaying remnants of the drainpipes. This is the current scenario of Mukesh Mills,at Colaba, which makes for a perfect horror film set. But designer Rocky S sees the beauty in the squalor; he says the place is gorgeous and astounding.

Here for the shoot of the Yamaha ad campaign with actor John Abraham,Rocky is leading a nomadic life these days moving from one city to another showcasing his clothes. As he settles down in the vanity van for the interview,Abraham makes his way out and slyly comments. “He is throwing me out of the van for this interview.”Rocky grins. “This year I have been showing at every fashion week possible – Delhi,Bangalore,Kolkata because I wanted to build my brand further. After this year,I will take a breather. Next year onwards,I will be showing at only one of the fashion weeks,” says the veteran designer who is back from Delhi after showing at the Men’s Fashion Week.

“It was amazing. In the last five years, men’s fashion has evolved so much that we needed this week to showcase the evolution,” states Rocky as he sips on some stress-busting coffee. At the Lakme Fashion Week,Rocky is making a comeback after five years and will take men’s fashion to another level by showcasing a classic line. “I was always associated with FDCI; hence I showed more in Delhi. But I have seen LFW growing as a brand and was keen on doing a show here,” he smiles in between phone calls.

Rocky may party hard, but stays away from page-three events. “I don’t want to be known as a page-three person or a Bollywood designer. I want to be known as a serious designer who knows his stuff.”

But Bollywood will never elude him and he too knows that. “My first break came with Mohra. Ever since I have enjoyed styling for films and film stars. Next up is Lamha and loads of ad campaigns,” he says as we walk towards the seaside where one of his favourites from Tinseltown is ready to shoot. “It’s not like John,Katrina Kaif or Bipasha Basu are my favourites. I have worked with them from the time they have been models. I know their body structure and they trust me with fittings,” he says as he tells Abraham that he will be back after a quick photo shoot for us.

In his 18-year long career,Rocky has had many turning points – he opened the Milan Fashion Week amidst Armani and Gucci, designed for Pussycat Dolls and Beyonce Knowles— but much remains to be achieved. “I have to set up my hotels and lounges. I want to expand my accessories line too,” he says, looking skywards.

As we often say, everything begins with a dream.
