Heavy rain continues to pound Mumbai; yellow alert extended

Following a day of incessant showers, the city woke up to spells of moderate rainfall on Friday. However, the intensity of showers picked up pace in the evening with the IMD issuing a nowcast warning at 4.45 pm, stating the possibility of moderate to intense spells of rain and gusty winds coupled with thunderstorm and lightning in isolated places of Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. A nowcast warning is the forecast of weather within a short period of time.

As heavy rains battered Mumbai, several pockets of the city were flooded owing to water logging. On Friday evening, the Andheri subway was closed and the traffic was diverted to Vile Parle’s Captain Vinayak Gore bridge. Though the subway was reopened shortly after the water was drained, traffic continued to pile along this route.

Furthermore, vehicular movement also slowed down along Kanjurmarg’s Gandhinagar junction and Sahara Star Ramnagar subway on Friday evening due to accumulation of water.
