A DIVISION bench of Bombay High Court,hearing a batch of petitions seeking better norms and action against illegal dumping grounds,on Thursday expressed concern over alleged violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms by BMC at Kanjurmarg dumping ground.
The court was responding to a Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) report.
Lawyer Kranti LC,appearing for one of the petitioners in the case said,The report states that the BMC has used more than the allotted 65.96 hectares for dumping garbage. The remaining land has been reclaimed from mangroves and wetlands.
A bench of Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice A A Sayed on Thursday questioned whether the corporation has any concern for the environment and the people.
The court has now asked the civic body to state whether it was using more land than allotted by the state government.
If any violation is found,the officer making the incorrect statement will be held liable, Justice Chandrachud said.The case will be heard on Friday.
