The Mulund police have registered a case of harassment against the husband as well as the mother-in-law of a woman,Jyoti Korde, who had set herself on fire allegedly after a fight with her husband on April 28 night. Jyoti’s mother and her brother Shankar Ghadge had filed a complaint with the Mulund police on Friday night alleging that Jyoti’s husband Dilip Korde (28) and his mother Kamlabai often harassed her.

“Though a case of suicide had been registered on the day of the incident,we couldn’t question Korde as no case of harassment was filed at that time. However,on Friday night Jyoti’s mother and brother arrived at the police station and filed a complaint against him and his mother alleging that they often harassed Jyoti and the couple used to have several fights between them,” said Police Inspector Chandrakant Jadhav of the Mulund police station. The police said that reason was suspected to be animosity between the victim and her mother-in-law.

“In their statements, the complainants have alleged that the ‘victim had disapproved of Kamlabai’s character and was openly critical about it. This led to several fights.’ While Korde and Jyoti stayed with their three children in a two bedroom flat in Mulund,Korde’s parents stayed in their hometown in Ahmednagar. Like any other family, the young couple would often visit their parents and parents also used to visit them. Even at the time of incident,Kamlabai Korde was back at home,” said a police official.

On April 28,Korde and Jyoti had allegedly fought when Korde criticised her for the way she had cooked chicken. Korde had allegedly also slapped Jyoti following which she had gone to sleep in the kitchen with her three children Nisha (5),Siddhi (2) and two-month-old Survesh. After several hours,Korde woke up to screams and smoke. After breaking down the kitchen door,he found Jyoti on fire. While Jyoti and Siddhi succumbed to burn injuries,Nisha and Survesh were rushed to the Burns Hospital. Survesh is still undergoing the treatment and Nisha had been discharged.

“Nisha’s statement is crucial in the case as she saw her parents fight before the incident and also was present when her mother immolated herself. We have also spoken to Kordes’ neighbours, who had reportedly witnessed the fight between the couple and had pacified Jyoti to calm down. They helped Korde break down the kitchen door,” said Jadhav.
