Embarking on a state tour as part of the Maratha reservation agitation, activist Manoj Jarange Patil on Wednesday said the government will have to announce reservation for the community by December 24.

The tour that began with a rally in the Vashi village of Dharashiv will culminate at Shegaon in Ahmednagar district on December 24 — the deadline he has set for the government to provide Kunbi caste certificates to all Marathas.

The tour will cover parts of Konkan and Western Maharashtra. Beginning his tour, Patil said, “The government will have to announce the reservation by December 24. We will not sit quietly till the reservation is granted to us.”

In October, Jarange Patil travelled through Marathwada and Western Maharashtra before starting the second phase of his hunger strike to press for the Maratha quota demand.

“The statewide tour would be in three phases. The first phase of nine days will start today,” a close aide of Jarange Patil said.

According to Patil’s supporters, during the tour, he will meet the Maratha community members and have a dialogue with them to boost their confidence. He will also instil faith in them that the community will get the reservation and the agitation will not stop unless the government provides the quota.

Patil called off his nine-day fast on November 2 following a discussion with a government delegation stating that all Marathas be provided Kunbi caste certificates by December 24. The state government, during its discussion with Jarange Patil, had asked for time till January 2.
