Govt-quota housing scam: EOW files chargesheet against husband of IPS officer

The FIR was registered in May when Chavan was already in judicial custody for his involvement in a Rs 263 crore Income Tax return fraud case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police on Thursday filed a chargesheet against an accused Purushottam Chavan, the husband of IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar in connection with a high-value government quota housing scam. The chargesheet, which is nearly 5,500 pages, claims Chavan had allegedly duped at least 20 people of Rs. 24.78 crore by offering them flats in Mumbai, Thane and Pune under the Maharashtra government’s housing quota at concessional rates.
A senior IPS confirmed the development and said, “There were a total of 11 suspects booked in the FIR including Chavan registered in January. But during investigation, police found the role of Chavan in the alleged fraud and a chargesheet was filed only against him. Others were found to be the victim in the case”. During investigation police seized bank accounts, Demat accounts and attached a flat. Chavan had partially refunded money to some of the victims, and the net amount scammed now stands at around Rs 19 crore, added the official.
