Govt mulls using MLA funds to install CCTVs in private schools

Reminding that the state government had issued an order in August 2024 mandating CCTV installation in schools, legislator Kiran Sarnaik pointed out that private schools do not receive non-salary grants, making the cost of installing and maintaining CCTV systems a financial burden.

Maharashtra School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse on Thursday said that a discussion will be held with the Finance department on whether MLA funds can be allowed to be used for installing CCTV cameras in private schools.

Bhuse said that state government has made the installation of CCTV cameras mandatory in all schools to enhance student safety.

“In government schools, these cameras will be installed using funds from the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC). For private schools, discussions will be held with the finance department to determine whether MLA funds can be utilised for this purpose,” Bhuse told the legislative council.

Reminding that the state government had issued an order in August 2024 mandating CCTV installation in schools, legislator Kiran Sarnaik pointed out that private schools do not receive non-salary grants, making the cost of installing and maintaining CCTV systems a financial burden.

Responding to it, Bhuse mentioned that CCTV cameras are compulsory in all schools for the safety of students. He also informed the House that 50 per cent of the schools in the state have already installed the cameras.

During the discussion, MLC Niranjan Davkhare too said that government schools are installing these cameras using DPDC funds, but private schools do not have access to the same. He urged the government to allow the use of MLA funds for this purpose.

Responding to this, Bhuse assured that discussions with the finance department would be held before making a decision. He also stated that the government would study special measures adopted in other states to ensure student safety.
