The Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway has seen a total of 624 accidents between December 11, 2022 and July 3, 2023. The government data states that in 192 of these, the accidents were caused because of sleepiness or tiredness of the driver.

As per the data accessed by The Indian Express from the state government, a total of 41 accidents have caused fatalities during this period in which 92 people have lost their lives. In 89 accidents, a total of 225 people were seriously injured and in 215 accidents nearly 436 suffered minor injuries.

Interestingly, the government record shows 98 accidents due to ‘other’ causes. Highway Hypnosis is said to be one of the major reasons for the accidents on Samruddhi Expressway and the government was mulling over options to put curbs on it. However, it has not been mentioned in the accident category. The government data has put nine deaths, 46 seriously injured and 66 minor injured in the ‘other’ cause. The accident causes mentioned in the government data include, tyre burst, sleepiness/tiredness, mechanical defect, over-speeding, cattle/animal crossing, wrong side driving, using mobile phone, parking or breakdown vehicle, drunken driving and other.

The records show 122 accidents during 3 am to 6 am. The highest number of fatalities (39) are recorded in accidents that took place during 12 am to 3 am, followed by 21 during 6 am to 12 pm.
