The Thane Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has started a probe into the Goodwin Jewellers cheating case. On Thursday, police sealed two penthouses at Palava city in Dombivali belonging to A M Sunilkumar, one of the owners of Goodwin Jewellers and an accused in the case.
“The houses have been sealed as part of our investigation,” a police officer said.
The police also seized a Mercedes car belonging to the accused. “The car was given as guarantee to a big investor, from whom we took the car,” the officer said. “As of now, we need to find out how were the houses and car paid for and how much are they worth,” he added.
Several FIRs have been registered at various police stations across Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar against brothers A M Sudheeshkumar and Sunilkumar, owners of Goodwin Jewellers, and others for allegedly cheating investors.
The incident came to light when several people who have invested in a monthly deposit scheme of Goodwin Jewellers approached the police claiming that the shop shuttered down around the time they were supposed to get returns on their money and gold. The police issued lookout notice against Sunilkumar on Tuesday to prevent him from fleeing the country.
The Kumar brothers, however, released a video on Tuesday maintaining they were innocent and that they were going to return the money of their customers.
