A man sitting on a footpath in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar was critically injured after a speeding car hit him in an alleged drunk driving incident early Saturday morning. A 30-year-old woman, who was behind the wheel of the car, and her friend have been detained. Both were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, the police said.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the woman, identified as Bhavika Dama, was driving towards Asalfa via LBS Road to drop her friend, Koram Bhanushali, 30, when the accident occurred.
The identity of the man remains unknown. He is currently unconscious and undergoing treatment at Rajawadi Hospital. “He was sitting on the footpath and suffered severe injuries and is serious,” Pawan Patil, Police Inspector, Ghatkopar police station, said.
The incident occurred around 6.30 am. According to the police, the car bearing a Gujarat registration number had three occupants at the time. CCTV footage shows one male passenger exiting the vehicle moments after the crash and fleeing the scene before police arrived.
“Both were allegedly drunk and driving the car on LBS Road and were supposed to go to Asalfa to drop Bhanushali at her home. But while driving, it seems that Dama lost control and ran over the footpath, injuring a person,” Patil said.
While the women were unharmed, passersby alerted the police and emergency services, and the injured man was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. The police have taken the women for medical tests and are questioning them about their movements prior to the accident.
While eyewitnesses confirmed the presence of three people in the vehicle, police officials reported finding liquor bottles inside the car.
“The police are searching for the absconding person. The FIR is being filed against the driver,” a police officer said.
