Gas leak at Thane chemical factory causes irritation in residents’ eyes; situation under control, say officials
The gas leak was reported from a factory in Morivali MIDC area of Ambernath.
A gas leak at a chemical company in Morivali MIDC yesterday night, in Ambernath Thane district, caused poor visibility, burning eyes, and sore throats among residents living in the vicinity of the place of occurrence.

A gas leakage from a chemical factory in Thane district’s Ambernath on Thursday night created scare among the residents.
Residents of Morivali Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and commuters developed irritation in the eyes and throat as the chemical fumes engulfed almost the whole of the city.
The gas leak was reported from a factory in MIDC area.
However, there was no casualty in the incident and the situation has been brought under control, said the disaster management cell of the Ambernath municipal council.
Officials said there was nothing to panic as it was just a cylinder that got leaked.
The disaster management cell of Ambernath said they were chalking out plans to avoid such situations in the future.
“As fumes spread to the streets we immediately rushed to the spot and checked everything,” said an officer.

He said that the MIDC as well as the other fire brigade officials are conducting further investigation into the matter.
As visuals of foggy roads following the gas leak have gone viral, residents said that fumes had reportedly spread towards the railway tracks, briefly disrupting the train services.
Ambarnath, home to numerous chemical factories, has experienced similar incidents in the past. In 2021, over 30 people were hospitalised following a gas leak at another factory.
Officials on-site told local media that the fumes originated from chemical containers stored on the factory premises.
