As Mumbai’s garbage problems mount,Mayor Sunil Prabhu sought to shift the blame on to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at a civic general body meeting on Monday.
Garbage collection issues can only be solved by the civic administration officials it is their duty. A contingency plan must also be made for garbage collection before a permanent solution can be reached, Prabhu said, addressing the meeting that included Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajeev Jalota.
Corporators from various wards raised the issue of garbage collection, blaming errant contractors for the rising stink affecting citizens at various parts of the city. Prabhu said the bureaucracy must provide answers to the questions raised by the corporators in the next meeting. Congress corporator Suresh Korparkar of the S ward of Bhandup, where residents have been facing problems since May,said,Garbage collection here has been pending for many days. The corporation must do something.
MNS corporator Sandip Deshpande of the G-North ward added that for the past two months, garbage compactors have not been seen in his constituency. The corporation seems to be running short of garbage compactors and the public is worst affected, said Deshpande.
Shekhar Chitale,Deputy Chief Engineer of the Solid Waste Management Department said,In the island city of the nine wards only the F-North ward is facing a problem of backlog in garbage collection. We will solve this problem in the next two days.
