The Paan and Berry Mix

Bandra-based Black Vanilla Chocolates is offering a range of paan and berry flavoured chocolate modaks. Sharon Confectioner,the maker of these quirky sweets,says,“While the popular roasted almond and fruit and nut modaks are almost always ordered,people love to add some unusual flavour to the mix to make their gifts stand out. Modak Cake Pops

With the city celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi tomorrow,the modak gets a quirky twist. Modaks — traditionally rice flour dumplings with a sweet filling of grated coconut and jaggery —now come in new avatars. Talk tells you what to expect:

Mother-daughter duo Neeru and Shradha Mehra work out off their Kemps Corner home and are known for their modak cake pops that come in a variety of flavours. “We have thandai,kalakand and green tea flavoured modaks with chocolate coating on the outside. This apart,we also make blueberry,strawberry and red velvet flavoured modak cake pops,” says Shradha.

Vegetable Modaks

When Chef Harun Sonone of the Resort Madh Marve decided to add a festive feel to his menu,he knew right away that he would go beyond the sweet modak. “There can be an overdose of sweets during the festival. Accordingly,I have come up with two savoury varieties of the modak — one has green peas and farsan as the filling while the other has carrot and paneer. These are both spicy versions of the modak,” he emphasizes.

Modak Cupcakes

Chef Rakhee Vaswani from Palate Culinary Studio makes modak cake pops as well,but has attempted to replace the traditional modak with modak cupcakes (cupcakes with modak on top). In addition,she makes soft truffle centre modaks,date and walnut chocolate modaks and Mars modaks. “All these items are eggless,” she says.
