Fragments of Life

For the five years that Anindo Ghosh has been exhibiting his photography, the one common theme of his work has been to explore things that “people walk past and notice but do not look at in detail”. Choosing to work primarily with night photography,he has,in the past, photographed the city’s skyline as seen from the sea-link and, perhaps from a window, the street below crawling with vehicles, their lights forming fascinating patterns.

His latest collection of photographs — to be exhibited at Jehangir Art Gallery,Fort, from June 12 in a show titled Urban Fragments — exists within the larger theme of his work but differs in other ways. “This time I haven’t taken pictures of the entire objects or places,” says the Mumbai-based artist.

The series contains photographs of fragments of places or objects seen in and around the city. For instance, instead of photographing Opera House in its entirety — something he believes has been “done to death” — Ghosh chose just one broken window in the building. In another image, the rear wheels of two cycles peep out from behind a wall, the composition making for a fascinating shot. The idea,he says,is to engage the viewer in the photograph. “Everyone is a storyteller in their mind,” he says. “If you engage the viewer enough, they would look at the photograph and then continue to think about it and form their own stories,” adds Ghosh

Straying away from his usual practice of night photography, for this show Ghosh has shot during both day and night,so as to accurately represent the city as a city dweller sees it. “To meet the perceptions of my viewer I had to photograph during the day and night, and strike a balance between the two,” he says.
