Four suicides in the city in just 24 hours

Four suicides were reported in various parts of the city between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Denied money to buy liquor by four of his relatives, a compulsive alcoholic killed himself and wrote their names in a suicide note on his shirt. The police on Sunday arrested the quartet for alleged abetment of suicide. Meanwhile, four suicides were reported in various parts of the city between Sunday night and Monday morning.

The police said that the deceased, Awadesh Jaiswal, a vegetable vendor, hanged himself in his Kurla residence on Saturday after writing the names ‘Deepak Jaiswal, Anil Jaiswal, Sanjit Jaiswal and Radheshayam Jaiswal’ on his shirt. The four men are also vegetable vendors in the Kurla market area.

“Awadesh, an alcoholic used to stay with the accused, and used to borrow money from them for liquor. Finally, they stopped giving him money, which seems to have frustrated him. We have arrested them on Sunday for abetment to suicide and they have been remanded to police custody,” said Senior Police Inspector Subhash Raut, Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station.

Meanwhile, in Oshiwara, Ekta Babbar (35), who used to provide talent for films and teleserials, jumped out of the window of her 16th floor apartment in the Green Acres building in the Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri (West), where she used to stay with her mother, around 11.45 pm on Sunday. The building watchman heard a loud thud, rushed towards the sound, found Ekta lying in a pool of blood and called the police. The impact of her fall had damaged her face and upper body beyond recognition.

Since the terrace was locked, the police started their inquiries with the only three flats without grills on their windows. Residents of the two flats were all accounted for, and the police proceeded to the third flat – Ekta’s house. “Ekta’s mother said she was sleeping in her bedroom, and on seeing the body, said it could not be Ekta’s as she had been wearing a nightgown, while the deceased was wearing a salwar-kameez. We then knocked Ekta’s bedroom door repeatedly and ultimately broke it down. Ekta’s nightgown was on the bed and the window was wide open,” said an officer.

Senior Police Inspector, Subhash Vele, Oshiwara police station added, “The suicide seems to have been planned as Ekta’s mother has said that she never locked her bedroom door.”

The police said that Ekta was depressed ever since her father’s demise five months ago, which is believed to be the reason behind her suicide.

Meanwhile, Bandra resident Bina Vajrani (44) jumped out of the window of her cousin Narayandas Narayani’s sixth floor apartment in Breach Candy early on Monday morning. Ashok Gupta, the night watchman, saw her body at 2:30 am on Monday and informed the police.

The Gamdevi police said that Bina and her father had come to stay at Narayani’s residence in the Oceanic building, Breach Candy on Saturday.

“The victim’s father has said that she was mentally disturbed for the last eight years, and that he believes this to be the reason behind her extreme step,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (south region) Krishna Prakash.
