A 48-year-old estate agent from Goregaon (East) was kidnapped, attacked with acid and abandoned on the highway near Mira Road by four persons on Monday night. According to the police, the incident was the fallout of a property dispute between the victim,Doodhnath Verma, and a builder.
The Kashimira police registered a case of kidnapping, robbery and assault, which was later transferred to the Vanrai police in Goregaon (East),said assistant inspector Vaibhav Shingare of the Kashimira police.
A Kashimira police patrol team spotted Verma on the highway and he was taken to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali.
Verma, the police said, was barely able to speak. He told the police that he owned a hutment at Kanyapada in Goregaon (East). The police said a few years ago,he and 750 other hut owners entered into an agreement with the builder that he would provide them with houses in return of developing the area under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme.
According to Verma, while the builder handed over homes to 500 people, the remaining 250,including him, were still staying in a transit camp. I had asked the builder to give me an alternative home first and then demolish my hut. In the past, the builder had tried to demolish my hut thrice, but I sought a stay order from the High Court, he added.
Verma added that on Monday,he had gone to the High Court to get an extension on the stay order. I had almost reached Goregaon (East) when a car stopped in front of me. The four men in the car got off and threatened me. They then forced me inside the car and took me to a room near Dahisar check post, said Verma.
He said the four beat him up,took out a bottle of acid and threw it on his eyes, ears and mouth. He was then dumped on the highway.
According to the Chief Medical Officer at Bhagwati Hospital,Verma suffered burns on his eyes and ears. He also had injury marks on his torso, and his lungs and other internal organs were affected due to the acid,he added. According to doctors, the acid was mild in strength but Vermas eyes were severely affected and could render him visually impaired.
Meanwhile,Vermas lawyer Kamlesh Yadav said that he would ask the Vanrai police to add the charge of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy against the accused.
