Four persons, including three women, were injured when bottles with an unknown chemical exploded in Vasai on Tuesday morning. The police have sent samples of the odourless chemical for analysis at the forensic laboratory in Kalina.

According to the police, tribals use such bottles with glass splinters to fish in ponds. When the bottle explodes, the glass splinters kill fish which are then netted. But since the bottles were hidden beneath clothes, they also suspect that this could be a type of crude bomb used by dacoits to loot jewellery stores.

Police said the incident took place around 7.30am when a few tribal labourers,Dinesh Kopatkar (25),his wife,Sugandha (20),Shewanti Wagh (36) and Jaywanti Chowdhary (50), were walking to work. When the four reached a multiplex,Shewanti noticed a sky blue plastic bag lying near the bushes.

“Out of curiousity,I opened the bag to see what was inside it. The bag contained a shirt, vest and a handkerchief and at the bottom four small bottles,” said Shewanti.

“I tried to open one of the bottles, and suddenly, there was a blast, and soon there was a series of three blasts. As a result, all the four bottles broke into pieces and glass splinters injured the four of us,” Shewanti said.

Sugandha, who is four months pregnant, also suffered major abdominal injuries but she is safe. Locals who witnessed the blasts rushed the four persons to the Vasai Government hospital and Vasai Gaon police were informed.

“The Bomb Detection and the dog squad from the Thane Rural police were pressed into service but due to the torrential downpour on Tuesday, vital clues were wiped out,” added Dipak Devraj,Deputy Superintendent of Police,Vasai.

He also said prima facie it appeared that the liquid belonged to tribals who use it to catch fish from ponds. “We suspect that some tribals may have kept the bag near the bushes with a motive to catch fish and must have forgotten to collect the plastic bag. When Shewanti opened the bag out of curiousity,a series of blasts occurred,” he said.

Dr Vinay Salpure,Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the hospital at Vasai said it was clear that the bottles contained some explosive material.

“All the patients have suffered glass splinter injuries in the abdominal area and some in the legs. The splinters have been removed,” he said.

The police have registered a case under Sections 336 (endangering life),337 (negligence conducted with respect to explosive substance) and 286 (causing hurt) of the IPC against unknown persons and are investigating further.

The police officers said that they also suspect that if the chemical was a crude bomb, the carrier might have thrown it there, fearing nakabandis.
