A 25-year-old commando shot himself in the chest on the terrace of the Force One building in Kalina at about 5 am Friday. Colleagues heard a gunshot and rushed to the terrace to find him lying in a pool of blood.
Nandlal Sonawane, who had joined the force two years ago, used his service revolver to commit suicide.
Dhule native was recently engaged to marry on May 12. Vakola police found a draft message in his mobile phone. They said the message in Marathi was typed in English.
He has blamed himself. He said his parents are good and so is his would-be wife but he is not and hence,he is killing himself. He has asked all to forgive him for his sins, said an officer at Vakola police station.
Sonawane of Sakri village came to Mumbai two years ago to join Force One. He had been having problems with his family and also with his wife-to-be. We are trying to ascertain the reason for the suicide.
A friend of Sonawane at Kalina said impending marriage had made him tense. Whenever we asked him what his problem was,he would cut the conversation and retire to his room on the fourth floor. He was depressed for a few days, said a colleague.
Vishwas Nangre-Patil,additional commissioner of police (West),said the commando had family issues and was depressed.
It does not seem he had problems with his wife-to-be. But something was wrong between him and his family with regard to the marriage. The exact cause of his death will become clear once we speak to his family members who are on their way from Dhule to claim his body, he said.
