Food poisoning linked to sweets from unclaimed bag: One more person dies

One more person died in a suspected case of food poisoning linked to sweets found in an unclaimed bag outside a government office in Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier, two men, Dasru Yaduvanshi (53) and Sunderlal Kathuria (75), who were suspected to have consuming the same sweets, had died.

According to officials at AIIMS Nagpur, Khushboo was brought to the hospital late Tuesday night and was declared dead around 6 am on Wednesday.

“The provisional cause of death is food poisoning leading to multi-organ failure. Samples have been sent for chemical analysis,” an official told The Indian Express. Two of the victims died in Madhya Pradesh, while Khushboo had been referred to Nagpur for advanced treatment, the official added.

Khushboo had been admitted to a private hospital in Chhindwara for the past six days after her condition deteriorated rapidly. Doctors said she was suffering from uncontrolled blood pressure and severe liver damage.

Dasru, a watchman employed at the Public Health Engineering (PHE) office, died on Sunday, while Sunderlal passed away during treatment on Tuesday. Another woman, remains hospitalised, while a 19-year-old woman, was discharged after treatment at a community health centre.

The incident dates back to January 9, when an abandoned bag containing sweets was found outside the Public Health Engineering (PHE) office in Junnardeo. Several people are suspected to have consumed the sweets, allegedly unaware of the risk.

An MP health official said post-mortem examinations had not revealed the exact cause of death.

Khushboo is survived by her husband and a four-month-old daughter. Her body was taken to her native village, for the last rites, the AIIMS official informed.
