The first retrofitted, fully alternate current (AC) EMU rake, was commissioned Saturday on the suburban section of Central Railway (CR).
By retrofitting, the running life of old rakes can be extended by 15 years. CR plans to convert 15 such 12-car rakes. CR has already retrofitted 20 rakes, but these were A/C and D/C dual rakes. This is the first time CR has retrofitted an A/C train.
The red, blue and yellow striped rake was retrofitted at Sanpada car shed. P K Shrivastava, chief electrical engineer,CR,said,Currently it takes three months to retrofit a rake, but soon it will take only one-and-a-half months.
The rake is fit for operation in 25 KV AC section and is compatible with 25 AC EMU rakes of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) built in its performance, sources said.
The cost of retrofitting work for one 12-car rake, which includes electrical equipment, mechanical modification in coaches, replacement of old passenger seats, coach partitions with stainless steel, improved ventilation, new fans and lights,is approximately Rs 3.5 crore as against the cost of a new AC rake, which is Rs 24 crore.
