THE CRIME Branch arrested four persons Tuesday for firing on a builder at his Chunabhatti office on February 5. Builder Jinesh Jain, a partner with Arihant group, survived the attack after being shot at twice by two burqa-clad persons. According to the police, main accused Pappu Yerunkar alias Sumit told them he shot at the builder as the latter went back on his word of giving him the contract for supplying raw materials at a construction site.
While Yerunkar was named as the main accused, Ajay Karosi (27) and Vinod Karuna alias Remo (28) were the ones who fired the shots, said the police. Babu Gupta (22), the fourth arrested accused, was the one who drove the others around. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni said Yerunkar had approached the builder when he (the accused) was out on parole in January last year.
The builder had agreed to give him the contract for supplying raw materials for an upcoming construction project but did not do so later.
“Yerunkar says that he was upset that the builder had gone back on his word and hence planned the attack on him,” Kulkarni said, adding that Yerunkar did not make any threat call but directly planned the attack once he was out of the Kalyan jail where he had met Karosi. Yerunkar, a history-sheeter with two murder cases against him, was granted temporary bail from the High Court in December when his pregnant wife was to deliver.
Nearly three weeks back, the plot to fire at the builder was hatched. “The intention of the accused was to scare the builder,” said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni.
