According to a source, apart from the said news channel, one of the videos uploaded by Thatte had invited a woman psychologist who "analysed" the explicit video purportedly of Somaiya, resulting in some derogatory remarks.
The Mumbai Police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Kamlesh Sutar, editor-in-chief of news channel Lokshahi, and mediaperson Anil Thatte for allegedly broadcasting information pertaining to the personal life of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya “without his consent”.
“An FIR has been registered in the case, based on the complaint filed by Somaiya. As per his complaint, explicit content was shared on Lokshahi channel by the accused,” said an officer.
Police have invoked relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act and Indian Penal Code Section 500 (punishment for defamation), and launched an investigation.
When asked about the inquiry that had been ordered to verify details of the purported clip, the officer said it was ongoing, but refused to divulge details about the status of the probe.
Another officer said that police further investigation is underway and they will soon record statements of Sutar and Thatte.
Earlier in the day, Sutar tweeted, “The Mumbai Police has registered a case against me in the viral video case of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. I have cooperated in the police investigation earlier, and will continue to do so. However, even though this is the case, the role of the public and work of raising questions will continue unabated!”
The Mumbai Police’s crime branch has also been asked to conduct an enquiry in the matter after the issue was raised in the Vidhan Parishad by Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, who provided a pen drive of the alleged videos to the Deputy Chairperson of the Upper House.
According to a source, apart from the said news channel, one of the videos uploaded by Thatte had invited a woman psychologist who “analysed” the explicit video purportedly of Somaiya, resulting in some derogatory remarks.
Danve and Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab had sought an enquiry in the matter, to check if any woman had been threatened to maintain relations with the person who is seen in the video. Based on the demand, state Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a high-level probe in the matter.
