In a daring daylight robbery on a crowded street in Dadar (East) on Wednesday,four men armed with choppers and pistols,intercepted a car driven by an employee of a finance company,and robbed him of Rs 70 lakh.
The robbers smashed the windows of the victims car,snatched the money,and fled towards south Mumbai in their getaway car,police said.
According to police,Ashwin Amritlal Rathod (35),employed with Bharani Brothers in Dadar (East),was driving to his office in a Hyundai Verna from his Borivali home when he was accosted by four men. Rathod,the police added,regularly carried large sums of money with him to his office.
He was taking Rs 70 lakh to his office. On Naigaon Cross Road between 10.15 and 10.20 am,a Hyundai Accent cut ahead of him and stopped. Four men,armed with choppers and pistols,rushed out of it and smashed the windows of Rathods car.
One of the men slashed Rathods hand and threatened to kill him unless he handed over the bag with the money. One of the accused then grabbed the bag and the men drove away, said inspector Asharam Pathare of Bhoiwada police station.
An offence has been registered under Sections 34 (common intention) and 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 25 and 34 of the Arms Act.
Rathod,who suffered a cut on his left hand,was taken to KEM hospital where he was treated for injuries,police said.
We are preparing sketches based on his description. He told us that they are 25-30 years old. There are no CCTV cameras near the spot but there are several eyewitnesses. We are recording their statements, he added.
Bharani Brothers declined to comment on the incident.
