Gargi Chate's father files complaint alleging intentional car crash leading to daughter's death.
Days after a 19-year-old girl died in an accident after the car she was in, rammed the divider on coastal road, her father lodged a fresh complaint alleging that the 22-year-old man driving the car deliberately drove at high speed and hit the divider in such a way as to intentionally cause harm to his teenage daughter.
The police said the accident occurred around 8 pm on February 8, when the woman, identified as Gargi Chate, and her male friend, Sanyam Sankala (22), were traveling south in Sankala’s Swift Dzire. At a curve on the coastal road in the Haji Ali area, Sankala allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to high speed, causing it to crash into the divider and overturn.
Chate lost her life in the incident, while her male friend was seriously injured.
The Tardeo police had initially registered a case of rash and negligent driving against Sankala. However, Chate’s father, identified as Vittal, filed a separate complaint at the Gangapur police station in Nashik. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was registered and later transferred to Tardeo police station for further investigation.
Vittal told the police that Gargi had called him around 7 pm on February 8, informing him that a person named Sanyam Sankala, from her area, was coming to meet her, and she would return home after meeting him for 10 minutes.
Claiming that Sankala had deliberately caused the accident, her father stated in his complaint: “I have learned that Sankala, who was driving the car, forced my daughter Gargi to sit in the front seat, then deliberately drove at high speed on the new coastal road towards Churchgate, ignoring the road conditions. He hit the divider on her side at the Haji Ali turn, causing the accident and resulting in my daughter’s death.”
“The father has raised suspicion that Sankala’s actions were an attempt to kill Gargi, which is why a fresh case was filed by the police in Nashik. We are probing the case and trying to verify the allegations,” an officer said.
