Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued directions to Maharashtra Director General of Police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a senior woman police officer to investigate the suicide of a woman doctor in Phaltan.

The move comes amid allegations led by the Opposition—Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP)—of foul play by a nexus of police and politicians. Former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar was also dragged in the case. CM Fadnavis has already given clean chit to him.

According to sources, with names of police officials of Satara police coming up in the case, the decision to form an SIT has been taken to avoid pressure on investigators. The order for the SIT is likely to be issued soon.

On October 22, a woman doctor working for a hospital in Satara was found dead at a hotel in the district’s Phaltan town with a note in her hand accusing a policeman of raping her four times. Serious allegations were raised against two PAs of former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar as well as the police. The woman complained that she was pressured to change the postmortem report of a patient.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has spoken with the victim’s family, assuring all possible help. The Congress has also demanded arrest of Naik, who has denied any wrongdoing.

Maharashtra Women Commission Chairperson and NCP leader Rupali Chakankar too has come under criticism for her recent statement indirectly blaming the victim. Her party president and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has openly expressed disapproval with Chakankar’s statement.
