The Mumbai police on Wednesday booked three employees of an electronics company for allegedly stealing electronic goods worth around Rs 40 lakh. The police said the theft had been occurring since June 30 last year and came to light recently during an audit process.

The three employees have been identified as Vaibhav Tambe, Sujit Singh, and Nilesh Jawkar, who worked as stock manager, product manager, and software operator, respectively, in the company.

As per the complaint lodged by the general manager of the company, which has 15 showrooms in Mumbai, electronic products are stored in their head office in Dadar. Based on demand, the products are supplied to the showrooms.

The police said the three employees, who have been booked in the case, worked in the head office and have been accused of stealing 68 high-end mobile phones, two laptops, three smartwatches, and two Bluetooth headphones.

Whiff of a crime

An officer said: “Initially, during the audit, the owner of the company found discrepancies involving two mobile phones, after which he personally visited the head office and enquired with Tambe, as he worked as a stock manager. Tambe then alleged that Singh and Jawkar would know about the missing electronic goods.”

Subsequent inquiries revealed that the three accused allegedly colluded and stole the electronic products from the head office between June 30, 2023, and November 30, 2024.

It further came to light that Jawkar created duplicate, falsified bills worth Rs 3.51 lakh to sell electronic items to his relatives.

“In our primary investigation, we have learned that Singh, who is a product manager, would dispatch certain electronic goods to a showroom. Afterward, he would personally visit and instruct them to return certain products to the head office, without making any entry in the software used by company employees to maintain stock records,” an officer said.

A case has been registered in the matter at the Dadar police station under Section 306 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of the master), Section 318 (4) (criminal breach of trust), and Section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
