A 36-year-old Ghansoli resident allegedly murdered his father by repeatedly banging his head on an iron cot. Police said he was reportedly embarrassed by his father’s conduct with neighbours.

The police identified the accused as Sagar Chaskar, a driver with a private taxi service, who was arrested on Monday evening.

According to the police, the incident occurred late on Sunday night after which Dashrath Chaskar (69) was rushed to a civic hospital in Navi Mumbai where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Rabale police initially registered a case of accidental death based on Sagar’s claims that his father suffered a head injury after falling down in an inebriated state.

On Monday, the police probe into Dashrath’s death revealed that he was murdered in front of his daughter-in-law, police said.

“The incident took place in a one-bedroom apartment inside a housing society in Rabale. At the time of the incident, the daughter-in-law was present in the room when her husband, Sagar, first pushed her father-in-law, Dashrath, towards a steel cot and then repeatedly banged his head on it. Both were reportedly under the influence of alcohol,” said Prashant Khaire, Zonal Deputy Commissioner, Navi Mumbai.

Khaire said blood on the cot corroborated the statements of the daughter-in-law.

“Prima facie it does indicate that it is a case of murder. Sagar was arrested on Monday night,” Khaire added.

Police said the father-son regularly quarrelled about Dashrath’s conduct with neighbours usually after getting drunk.

“The postmortem examination revealed that Dashrath suffered injuries on his head and forehead after being hit by a heavy object,” Khaire added.
