At least 22 people were killed and 39 others were injured in a stampede at Mumbai’s Elphinstone railway station on Friday. The stampede took place on foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations. BMC’s disaster management unit said “required agencies have been mobilised.” Mumbai Police said there is a shortage of A -ve, B -ve and AB -ve blood group in KEM hospital.
Elphinstone station is usually crowded during peak hours as it caters to office-goers in the Lower Parel area. The station, on the Western Line of the Mumbai suburban rail network, also connects to Parel station on the Central line.

11: 40 pm: Fadnavis said that his government will provide all the assistance required by the Railways to conduct its inquiry. “Have given assurance to Railway ministry that the state government & local administration will do everything needed,” CM Fadnavis told ANI reporters.
11: 40 pm: CM Devendra Fadnavis further said that the Railway Ministry has initiated an audit of the foot overbridge at the Elphinstone Road station to prevent any future incidents. “Railways ministry has started an audit of FOBs at stations so that similar incident is not repeated in the future,” Fadnavis told ANI news agency.
11: 35 pm: While speaking to reporters at KEM Hospital Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said this was a sad and serious incident and promised an inquiry will be conducted to look into the incident. “It was a very sad and a serious incident. An inquiry will be done into the incident,” ANI news agency quoted CM Devendra Fadnavis.
10:55 pm: Cheif Minister Devendra Fadnavis reached KEM hospital to take stock of the situation. He had arrived in Mumbai at 10 pm, after concluding his three days official tour to South Korea and Singapore. He drove straight from Airport to KEM Hospital.
10:12 pm: A Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde has demanded separation of the Mumbai suburban railways from the overall rail network. He has also demanded that the government implement the recommendations made by Kakodkar committee on providing improved passenger amenities.

4.20 pm: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has reacted to the incident. “Deeply pained to know about the tragic stampede at Elphinstone station.

4.15 pm: Former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, in a letter dated 20 February, 2016, had written to Maharashtra MP Arvind Ganpat Sawant, saying the construction of 12m wide new foot over bridge at Elphinstone Road was under the “positive consideration” of Railway Ministry.

3.00 pm: MoS Railways Sinha said no one should do politics on such an unfortunate incident and slammed the Opposition for doing politics on the issue. “There are people who always seek opportunity. We are above politics on the issue,” Sinha said.
2.55 pm: Reflecting on the incident, MoS Railways Manoj Sinha insisted that the tragic incident happened due to stampede and that no question has been raised on the structural strength of the bridge, ANI reported.
2.15 pm: A Class 4 student was among those killed. Rohit Parab was going to the Parel market with his elder brother Aakash to shop for Dussehra when the Elphinstone stampede took place. While Aakash suffered injuries in the accident, Rohit could not be saved.
2.10 pm: Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu condoled the Elphinstone stampede. “My deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their dear ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he wrote on Twitter.
2.05 pm: Meanwhile in Bengaluru, two people were killed in another stampede by hundreds of people jostling to obtain coupons for free food offered by a local philanthropist, police said. The philanthropist has been detained for questioning.
2.00 pm: Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Minister Vinod Tawde reach KEM Hospital. “Compensation of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to kin of those dead. State government will bear medical expenses of injured,” Tawde said.

Expressing her concerns over rail safety, Sonia Gandhi said “such accidents could have been avoided had there been proper planning and concern for safety.” She has also asked the Regional and Pradesh Congress Committee and Congress workers to contribute in providing assistance to the families of the bereaved.

1.28 pm: CM Fadnavis also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kins of deceased. “All the medical expenses of the injured will be borne by Government of Maharashtra. 1.25 pm: Eye-witnesses recount their horror after the Elphinstone stampede. “There were dead bodies on me and underneath me. I was pulled out. I drank water and looked for my friend. He is badly injured,” said Mohammed Hasan, who works as a tailor in Parel.
1.20 pm: Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has reached Mumbai. “Have ordered a high-level enquiry headed by the Chief Safety Officer, Western Railways,” he wrote on Twitter. Goyal also expressed his condolences on the tragedy. The Railway Minister was scheduled to be in the city to launch 100 new Suburban Rail Services in Mumbai.
1.19 pm: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences on the tragedy. “Saddened and shocked to know about the tragic stampede at #Elphinstone railway station, foot over bridge. #Mumbai. My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones and got affected. #Elphinstone,” Fadnavis wrote on Twitter. He also spoke to Chief Secretary and Mumbai Commissioner of Police and “asked them to reach hospital to monitor and ensure that everyone gets all the help.”

1.00 pm: Rajesh Verma, one of the commuters at the station, said as it started raining, people started crowding the foot overbridge and refused to leave. As trains kept entering the station, the crowd on the FOB increased and at one point of time, he says, there were at least three people on top of each other. His friend Anuj suffered a fracture to his hand is recuperating at KEM hospital.
12.55 pm: President Ram Nath Kovind reacted to the Elphinstone stampede. “Anguished by the loss of lives in the stampede in Mumbai. Condolences to the bereaved families; prayers with injured,” he wrote on Twitter.
12.47 pm: Expressing his condolences on the Elphinstone stampede, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said an “inquiry should be instituted immediately and action must be taken against those responsible for this tragedy.” He also said the government should announce a compensation of 10 lakhs to next of kin of the deceased and 1 lakh to the injured.

12.41 pm: Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said 22 people had been killed in the stampede and 27 were injured.

12.35 pm: “Due to sudden rain, people were waiting at the station. When the rain stopped there was chaos to go out, stampede occurred,” A Saxena, DGPR, Railway was quoted as saying by ANI.
12.25 pm: Police suspect a short-circuit with a loud sound near the foot overbridge led to panic and people started running, resulting in the stampede, reports news agency PTI.
