Eleven children suffered food poisoning after drinking flavoured milk at MHB Urdu municipal school in Malvani,Malad,on Thursday. Following this, the civic body decided to stop supply of flavoured milk to its schools.

Education committee chairman Vitthal Kharatmol visited the children in P-North ward with education officer Mirza Baig.

“The doctor who examined the children said the poisoning was not severe and they will be fine by evening,” Kharatmol said.

Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said,“We are not sure if it was food poisoning but the children were vomiting. We have sent the milk for testing and stopped the supply as of now.”

In September, the corporation had temporarily suspended the supply of flavoured milk following four cases of food poisoning at Prabodhankar Thackeray school in Sewri.

“We had sent the milk for testing. The lab report confirmed nothing was wrong with the milk. This is why we re-started the supply,” Kharatmol said.

In May,despite protests from the Opposition, the corporation approved a Rs 121-crore proposal to supply flavoured milk to BMC schools.

In 2010,after 11 cases of food poisoning and lab tests, the civic body said packaged milk was unfit for consumption.
