An alleged member of the Ejaz Lakdawala gang was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch earlier this week for his involvement in a firing incident in which a 32-year-old real estate broker was injured in October.
The victim was suspected to be closely associated with the members of gangster Chhotta Shakeel gang. With this arrest,the total number of arrests in the case is now four,Crime Branch officials said. They said the accused, an alleged aide of Lakdawala,identified as Jafar Isaak Madwala (55) was arrested from Jogeshwari on Thursday for allegedly handing over cash to the shooters at the behest of Lakdawala.
Jafar was remanded in police custody till November 21 by a local court, said a crime branch officer. Jafar also managed the financial matters of Lakdawala in the city for years and also had an extortion case lodged against him in 2004, added the officer. On October 14,three accomplices identified as Prashant Rao,Nilesh Jatanna and Riyaz Ahmed Shaikh were arrested in the case.
On October 1,the victim Sohail Khan was talking to his friends on Shaikh Burhan Karmudin street in Nagpada,when pillion rider Rao allegedly fired three rounds. Riding the bike was his aide Jatanna.
Lakdawala had made a number of calls to the builder of Nirbaan Constructions since September 9 this year to threaten the builder for protection money. The gangster ordered his aide Rao to open fire outside the construction site to threaten him.
Rao was also involved two more firing incidents at constructions sites,one at a construction site in Navi Mumbais Vashi area in which nobody was injured whereas the second incident was reported at a builders construction site in D N Nagar in which nobody was injured,police said. Jafar had given money to Rao to execute the crimes,the police said.
