Two pedestrians were killed in a drink-driving accident at MIDC in Andheri (East) in the early hours of Monday. The police have arrested the 24-year-old driver of the Maruti Swift,who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
The MIDC police identified the accused as Lalit Madhuprakash Sharma,a resident of Raj Paradise building in Marol area of Andheri (East) is an MBA student who also works for a courier firm.
The police said the accident occurred around 12.20 am on Monday when Sharma was returning home in his white Maruti Swift after attending a party at a friends residence at Jogeshwari (East). When he approached the Vijay Nagar Bridge at Marol,Sharma allegedly lost control over the vehicle and knocked down two pedestrians identified as Meen Bahadur Chatri (50) and M Khanal (45).
Officers said Chatri and Khanal were walking towards Sainath Nagar when they were hit by Sharmas car from behind. They fell on the road,after which Sharma allegedly ran over them.
Senior Inspector Suresh Hujband at MIDC police station said,They were rushed to Seven Hills Hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. They had suffered grievous head injuries. While Khanal ran a Chinese food stall in Andheri (East),Chatri was part of the kitchen staff at a five-star hotel.
The police said Sharma was arrested under Indian Penal Code Sections 279 for rash driving,304 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder,and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Sharmas preliminary medical examination confirmed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. His blood report is awaited. After being produced before a metropolitan court on Monday,he was remanded in police custody till August 1,said Hujband.
