The BEST bus driver arrested in connection with the Bhandup accident filed a bail plea before the sessions court on Tuesday.

The driver, Santosh Sawant (52), claimed that the accident occurred while he was trying to save pedestrians who suddenly came in way of the bus when he was trying to turn it on the narrow and congested station road.

As many as four persons were killed and eight others were injured when the BEST bus allegedly ran over pedestrians outside Bhandup railway station on December 29, 2025.

He has said that the station area has a narrow road and a lot of congestion due to illegal encroachment by hawkers.

“When the applicant accused was diverting the bus from the narrow road, he tried to save the people who were riding a rickshaw and pedestrians who suddenly came in the way and in that attempt, he lost control of the bus and this incident took place. The accused is not at fault in this,” the plea says.

It further said that the evidence including postmortem of the victims, Regional Transport Office (RTO) inspection report, statements of witnesses have been recorded and he will co-operate with the further probe. The court has directed the prosecution to file its reply and the hearing will be held next week.
