The state government’s plan to change the colour of taxis from the familiar black-and-yellow has met with resistance.
“We don’t want the colour changed. It is not just any colour but our identity,” said A L Quadros,general secretary of the Bombay Taximen’s union.
“It’s part of the city’s culture. Whatever reform the government wants should be done without changing the colour,” said Deepak Sawant,president of the Shiv Sena-affiliated Taxi Chalak Malak Sena. Sawant,an MLC,said he would raise the issue in the Legislative Council.
Early this year,the government had decided to change the colour of taxis and asked students of the JJ School of Arts to shortlist some colours. The government is yet to receive any inputs from them.
Taxi drivers fear they might have to pay for repainting the taxis. Transport department sources said the government was considering several options. One was to instruct vehicle manufacturers to colour the taxis as per the guidelines. Another option was to ask advertisers to paint taxis in lieu of ad space on taxis.
