Domestic help booked for stealing 60 derby trophies from club owner’s residence

The Gamdevi police have launched a manhunt for a domestic help who allegedly stole around 60 silver and gold-studded trophies worth Rs 15.24 lakh belonging to a club owner in Mumbai.

According to the police, the complainant, Shiven Surendranath (59), a film director by profession and a resident of Breach Candy area in Gamdevi, owns the Royal Western India Turf Club Limited (RWITC) and the Diamond Band Racing Syndicate Pvt Ltd. He has many horses which are taken for races at Mahalaxmi Racecourse. During horse races, Surendranath acquired trophies studded with gold and silver, which he kept in his ground-floor residence.

According to the complaint, Rajendra Benudhara Jena (42), a native of Shikharpur in Odisha, was working as a full-time domestic help at his residence from the last five years. The complainant said that Jena started staying at his residence for the past six months and had access everywhere in the 2bhk flat.

On November 23, 2025, Jena informed that he needed to travel to Kolkata for a couple of days for some urgent work and would return soon. However, when he did not turn up after a few days, the complainant called him and he stopped taking his calls.

As Jena did not return and his mobile was unreachable, on January 2, Surendranath checked the valuables at his residence and found his collection of trophies and other valuables worth Rs. 15.24 lakh missing.

Surendranath then approached the Gamdevi police station. The police team visited his residence and after it was confirmed that the trophies were missing, the police recorded his statement and registered a case of theft against Jena on January 4. “Police are on the lookout for Jena. If the accused sold the trophies, it could be recovered,” said an officer at the Gamdevi police station.
