His courage and timely help from his colleagues helped an injured police constable from Antop Hill police station nab a robber, who belongs to a gang notorious for mugging people.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Tuesday, when Constable Ramesh Pawar and head constable Dattareya Chavan happened to see a bunch of youths thrashing a taxi driver.

“They seemed to be threatening the driver to hand over his cash and valuables and were manhandling him. When Chavan went up to them to enquire and subsequently tried to dissuade them from hitting the driver, the youths angrily slashed at him with a chopper and he collapsed to the ground. The youths then began running away and I happened to nab one of them,” said Pawar.

As Chavan got up,the taxi driver who identified himself as Shahid Sheikh (35),went in the direction of the nearest police chowki to get help, even as Pawar held on to the accused.

“I had my arm around his neck to prevent him from fleeing and slowly began walking with him in the direction of the chowki. However, his friends had kept a watch on us and seizing an opportunity while we approached a dingy area, one of the gang members accosted me. He slashed my arm with a chopper in a bid to help his associate escape but at that minute two police personnel from the chowki approached us and raised an alarm. Fearing arrest, the chopper-wielding youth ran away,” said Pawar, who had then brought the accused to the police station, where he was formally arrested.

During interrogation, the accused said his name was Ganesh Devendra, and when he was kept in custody with a robber duo,who had been arrested two days ago,he recognised them as members of the same gang that he belonged to.

“Incidentally,on Sunday night we arrested a gang of four robbers who had mugged a 55-year-old shopkeeper, who was on his way back home on Saturday. They had accosted the shopkeeper, hit him on the head with an iron pipe and snatched all his cash and cell phone before running away. The victim,Vasant Pawaskar, had immediately lodged a complaint at the police station, describing the accused as men between 25-30 years of age. Based on an informant’s tip off,we arrested two of the accused,Guddu Rahim Sheikh and Shankar Phawadia, the very next day from the area,” said Senior Police Inspector,Antop Hill police station,D N Deokar.
