A man allegedly strangulated his two children before committing suicide at his residence in Chakala in Andheri (East) on Wednesday.

Police said Santosh Arkar was depressed and tired of his illness. He was suffering from diabetes for a long time and was recently hospitalised. His wife Radha has been working as a domestic help in Singapore for a year and Santosh was looking after both their children— Sunil and Nitali. While Sunil studied in Bombay Cambridge school,Nitali was a student of Mahila Sangh school.

The incident occurred between 12.30 pm and 2 pm on Wednesday after the children returned from school. Arkar’s sister Alka, who stays nearby, had gone to his residence to call him for lunch. Neighbours broke open the door after he did not respond and found the bodies of the children lying on the bed and Arkar hanging.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Andheri division) Prakash Vhatkar said,“He was ill for sometime and was depressed. We have recovered a suicide note from his house, which says he was committing suicide and taking his children with him as he was depressed. He said sorry to his wife as he could not do anything for her.” They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but declared dead on arrival.

Neighbours said Arkar was unemployed as he kept ill. He has five sisters, one of whom stays in America, the police said.
