The three alleged masterminds of the Deonar dumping ground fire were on Monday booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. Police have identified them as Atikh Khan (42), Rafiq khan (49) — both scrap dealers — and absconding accused Javed.
They had egged on ragpickers to set fires and pick out metal pieces from the garbage. So far, 15 men have been held for allegedly causing the fire inside the dumpyard on January 28 and March 20.
Confirming the development, Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sangramsinh Nishandar said the charges were framed only against Atikh, Rafiq and Javed. “MCOCA has been evoked as there is evidence against the trio,” Nishandar said.
“The others were only the foot soldiers. We have found that the trio was mainly responsible for the idea. This according to us is an organised crime,” said a senior police officer. All the arrested are in jail as their bails have been denied by a sessions court in Mumbai.
