Over 114 detained: Demolition of structures a routine activity, says Nagpur Commissioner of Police

Stating that the authorities have registered 13 FIRs and detained more than 114 individuals following recent incidents of vandalism and riot in Nagpur, the Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Singal said that action taken by authorities against illegal structures on Monday were part of routine operations.

“Strong action will be taken against those involved in unlawful activities. If their property is illegal, then it falls under the regular encroachment drive by the civic authorities. Criminals do not belong to any particular caste or religion – anyone engaged in criminal activities will face strict consequences,” Singal said, adding that the action by authorities were part of routine operations against illegal structures.

Raising concern over misinformation on social media Singal urged content creators to act responsibly. “There are several YouTubers who operate with the intent to provide information. However, we appeal to all content creators to refrain from sharing material that could incite enmity between communities or defame individuals. The Nagpur Police are closely monitoring such activities,” Singal said.

He said that the authorities have taken strict action in response to the recent riots, with more than 114 individuals taken into custody and 13 FIRs registered across various police stations. He added that legal action has been initiated against individuals who circulated inflammatory videos on social media, with separate FIRs lodged by the Cyber Cell of Nagpur Police.

“Those seen in the video footage obtained, who are spotted with a stone or are seen in action, are being treated as accused in the Nagpur riots,” he said adding that more than 18 teams are working on the investigation of riots, and over six teams are working on identification through social media platforms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Nagpur on Sunday and the authorities are ramping up security arrangements ahead of his arrival. Speaking on the preparations, Dr Ravinder Singal stated, “We have started making arrangements for PM Modi’s visit based on the preliminary information received. It has been over a week since the riots happened, and the city has returned to normal. The Prime Minister’s safety is our top priority, and there will be no compromise on that. The Nagpur police are fully capable of handling the situation. The unrest was limited to two specific areas, and the overall situation is now under control.”
