The Kandivali police arrested two men on Tuesday for allegedly extorting Rs five lakh from a manager of a pizza chain after they found a dead lizard in a pizza served in the eatery.
The police said that two men, identified as Mirza Baig (24), and Yusuf Salim Shaikh (23), who are residents of Oshiwara in Andheri (west) had gone to the pizza outlet located at Mahavir Nagar on Sunday evening when the incident took place.
According to the Kandivali police officers, the two men ordered a pizza and were about to eat it when they found a dead lizard in it.
The manager of the outlet, Manoj Mohan Kotapirat, who is the complainant in the case, has told the police that after finding the lizard the two men shot a video of the pizza and called him to their table. Kotapirat spoke to the two and tried to settle the matter.
Kotapirat in his complaint has said that the two told him that if he didn’t want them to approach the Food and Drug
Administration, he would have to pay them Rs five lakh for their silence.
The manager, however, shot a video of the duo demanding money from him and then approached the police, after which he registered a complaint.
Based on the complaint, the police have arrested Baig and Shaikh, charging them with extortion and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
“We are now verifying the entire incident and trying to find out whether the dead lizard was actually found in the pizza that the men had ordered in Pizza joint,” said Police Sub Inspector M Desai, Kandivali police station.
