A day after the decomposed body of a woman was found stuffed inside a suitcase on the banks of Desai Creek near Palava area in Thane district, the police managed to nab the culprit and identify the woman.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Priyanka, 22, who was staying with the accused, Vinod Sriniwas Vishwakarma, 50, a resident of Desaigaon in Thane. He works at a construction site, and his family lives in his native place at Utter Pradesh.
Vishwakarma confessed during an interrogation that he met the woman at Thane railway station five years ago and brought her to his residence, and after that she stayed with him, said a police officer. There was a fight between them at night on November 21, and in a fit of rage, the accused had strangled her to death and kept her body in a trolley bag in the room for one day at his residence with the intention of destroying the evidence. After getting a chance, the accused took the trolley bag containing the body and threw it from the bridge, said the officer.
The incident came to light on Monday afternoon (November 24) when people noticed the bag as the body was partially out of the suitcase. The police were informed, and a team from the Shildaighar police station reached the spot. The body was sent to the hospital for post mortem.
Prima facie, the woman was strangled to death, and the body was stuffed in a suitcase for disposal at the creek, said Shildaighar police station senior inspector Shriram Pol. A case of murder was registered and an investigation was launched. The officer said no identification marks were found, as the body was highly decomposed. The police were trying to establish the identity of the woman. Missing person cases in Thane, Mumbai, Kalyan, and Dombivli and CCTV footage from Palava and other areas were checked. The deceased woman was wearing a pink top with an embroidered floral design on it and red leggings. The woman had tattooed “PVS” in English on her left wrist, said the official.
The details about the woman were spread on social media in the vicinity, and based on the CCTV footage, the accused was identified as Vinod Srinivas Vishwakarma. He was taken into custody, and after he confessed, he was arrested for murder and destruction of evidence. The police have been inquiring more about the woman, and further interrogation is going on, said Pol.
