A cyclonic circulation has developed over southeast Arabian Sea, which is likely to move northwards in the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Monday.

However, a concrete picture of whether the cyclone will move towards Mumbai will be available only by Tuesday, said the officials.

In a statement, IMD officials said that a well marked low-pressure area may develop in the sea by Tuesday morning. “Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea, a low pressure area has formed over the same region, and the associated cyclonic circulation extends upto mid-tropospheric levels,” the IMD said.

“It is likely to move nearly northwards, become a ‘well marked low pressure area’ by tomorrow morning and then concentrate into a depression over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea during subsequent 36 hours,” the statement added.

“The cyclonic formation is in a developing stage. In the next 24 hours, low pressure will be formed and subsequently a depression may be formed in 48 hours, implying that conditions are favourable for a possible cyclone. However details on the onset will be available on Tuesday,” said Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD.
