The onset of monsoon in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra will be delayed by at least five days, due to several factors, including the formation of cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The official onset of monsoon in Mumbai is around June 10 and 11, however, IMD officials said that considering the current weather pattern, the onset is likely between June 14 and 16.
“The official date of monsoon in Kerala was June 1. Usually the onset happens in Kerala and it moves northwards. However, it is yet to arrive in Kerala,” said Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai.
Kamble said that the usual conditions of the onset would be consistent rainfall of above 2.5 mm for two days in at least 10 out of 14 districts in Kerala and then in Karnataka, along with surface winds blowing between 15 and 20 knots. However, these conditions have been absent so far.
On Tuesday, Cyclone Biparjoy that was developing in the Arabian Sea has moved far northwards, said officials.
According to the latest forecast, the depression over southeast Arabian Sea has moved northwards at a speed of 11 km/hour over the past three hours and have been over the same region that would be 950 km in the west-southwest of Goa, and around 1,100 km southwest of Mumbai, 1190 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1,490 km south of Karachi.
“The onset of monsoon in Mumbai is also likely to be affected as due to the cyclone, the moisture has moved away. This situation will take around a week to become normal and monsoon may hit Mumbai around June 14-15,” said another official.
