A special court this week rejected an application filed by Sameer Khan, NCP leader Nawab Malik’s son-in-law, seeking to ‘de-freeze’ his bank accounts.

Khan was booked in a case by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and arrested in January 2022 by the NCB along with five others. They were accused of playing a role in the procurement, sale, purchase and transport of drugs.

In his application, Khan said that during the action taken by NCB, the agency had also seized his current and savings accounts. Khan had submitted that there was no evidence to show that the money in the accounts had anything to do with allegations. He had further said that his tenants deposit rent in these accounts which he is now unable to access.

Three years after NCB filed a chargesheet in the case, it claimed that it is investigating and identifying illegally acquired properties as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The court agreed with this contention and rejected the plea.

Khan was granted bail in the case in 2022 with the court stating that there was no prima facie case for illicit drug trafficking and conspiracy against him.
